Advocacy
Human rights advocacy that brings LGBTI expertise into the rooms where laws and policies take shape, worldwide.
How we do it
ILGA World advocates for laws and policies that bring equality, freedom, and justice to all people of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, and sex characteristics.
Recognising our grassroots communities as the experts on their lives drives our whole LGBTI human rights advocacy, strategic litigation, and policy work. We stay close to the needs of our member organisations, and together we engage with the international, regional, and national mechanisms that are willing to listen, supporting actions with strategic analysis and research.
Every day, we are present across the United Nations human rights system, creating a space where States, experts, and institutions that shape human rights protection can hear directly from LGBTI people worldwide — at the Human Rights Council, the Universal Periodic Review, the treaty bodies, the Special Procedures, the Commission on the Status of Women, and the High-Level Political Forum.
We support our member organisations in turning international human rights laws and policies into change that our communities can feel in their daily lives.
We are present in global spaces that discuss sustainable development, economic empowerment, and the right of people to play sports, so that LGBTI people too can access a life of dignity and equitable participation in society.
Together with our LGBTI communities and civil society organisations in feminist, SRHR, democracy, climate justice, and other movements, we create a world where everyone can exercise their human rights and live in equality and freedom.
