Knowledge production

We transform legal and social data into trusted LGBTI research that advances equality, informs action, and supports lasting change for our communities worldwide.

How we do it

ILGA World makes LGBTI knowledge accessible to everyone. We took this commitment to our communities decades ago and have renewed it ever since.

From the Pink Book in the 1980s to the ILGA World Legal Survey in the 1990s, through the years of the landmark State-Sponsored Homophobia and Trans Legal Mapping Report to the present day, our LGBTI research has mapped laws affecting our communities across every region, described the social and economic challenges we face, and monitored the work of the human rights systems designed to protect everyone.

The term “State-sponsored homophobia” entered headlines and conversations across the world. Our findings were cited in historic court rulings that finally set millions of people free. Our LGBTQ reports inspired art that called for change.

Over the years, our human rights research has continued to evolve, remaining true to its mission.

These days, ILGA World maps continue to show how far from equality we still are. Through our free, interactive, and collaborative knowledge hub — the ILGA World Database —landmark publications like Laws on Us, Our Identities Under Arrest, and the Intersex Legal Mapping Report, along with the ILGA World Monitor, LGBTI advocacy toolkits, and explainers, we give activists, media, and decision-makers the evidence for advocacy, narratives, and laws. Through LGBTI Pathways, we map funding gaps to transform the quality and quantity of resources for our communities around the world.

This is the information that human rights defenders need to challenge injustice and that policymakers, governments, and courts rely on to create a fairer world.
