Hi, it’s Daniele from ILGA World.
Today the last session of the year of the Human Rights Council begins at the United Nations, and we will be there.
We know: it’s not a great moment for international human rights law and the bodies committed to ensure that people can enjoy their human rights. This is why it’s more important than ever that we don’t let go, remind of what these bodies helped us achieve, and continue using these spaces to make our voices heard.
Also: during this 60th session of the Human Rights Council, something truly historic will happen. So, let’s dive in!
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights will present its first ever report on discriminatory laws and policies, violence, and harmful practices against intersex persons.
Now, you may wonder: why is the report such a big deal?
Well, because over 190 organisations and activists, including intersex people worldwide, contributed to it. This means that intersex voices are now on official United Nations record in a report, and States will no longer be able to ignore the realities they describe.
With this report, the United Nations is helping change awareness of intersex people’s lives and has laid the groundwork to rectify historic injustices.
We will join forces with intersex human rights defenders from all over the world as the report is presented, and also co-host an event at the United Nations to further change awareness of intersex people’s lives. This report and the collective work of civil society is unveiling the silent shroud surrounding intersex bodies.
During this session, we will also co-host side events looking at the impact of aid cuts on human rights in Afghanistan and at gender equality in multilateral spaces.
The lives and experiences of LGBTI people deserve to be heard just as much as everybody else’s. It’s our shared humanity!
This is why we will also take the floor in dialogues addressing the situation in Afghanistan and the right to development, and provide our communities’ perspectives on how both youth and older persons can enjoy their human rights.
We will also support activists taking the floor as their countries will hear the outcomes of their Universal Periodic Review.
Throughout the Human Rights Council, ILGA World will be there for you and with you. Count on us to elevate your voice, because, through us, our LGBTI communities can be heard at the United Nations!
