HLPF 2024: ILGA World supports LGBTI human rights defenders advocating for inclusive sustainable development
Summary:
The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) is the central United Nations platform for the review and follow-up of the Sustainable Development Goals at the global level.
Every year, to ensure that governments are doing their job towards the achievement of these Goals, they – along with civil society organisations and other stakeholders – gather at the UN headquarters in New York to conduct an in-depth review of the global status of five SDGs.
The 2024 High-Level Political Forum is happening between 8 and 17 July, and ILGA World will be there too – supporting LGBTIacronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people. Although this is not the acronym available to describe people of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, and sex characteristics, it is the most commonly used in United Nations spaces and advocacy. More human rights defenders advocating for inclusive sustainable development!

More and Sustainable Development Goals
The High-Level Political Forum is the central United Nations platform for the review and follow-up of the SDGs at the global level.
Every year, to ensure that governments are doing their job towards the achievement of these Goals, they, along with civil society organisations and other stakeholders, gather at the UN headquarters in New York to conduct an in-depth review of the global status of five SDGs.
Some member states also present their Voluntary National Reviews or VNRs on the progress they have made and the challenges they face in fulfilling the SDGs.
This year, they will gather for the HLPF from July 08 to July 17, and tackle the theme: “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions.”
Five SDGs are under review, namely:
SDG 1: No Poverty; SDG 2: Zero Hunger; SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions; and just like every year: SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
..and a whooping 43 UN member states will present voluntary national reviews, including 17 African States, 11 Asia-Pacific States, eight Latin American and Carribean States, four Eastern European States, three Western European and other States: Argentina, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belize, Brazil, Chad, Congo (Republic of), Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Estonia, Georgia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Honduras, Israel, Kenya, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Libya, Mauritania, Mauritius, Micronesia (Federated States of), Namibia, Nepal, Oman, Palau, Peru, Samoa, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, South Africa, South Sudan, Spain, State of Palestine, Syrian Arab Republic, Uganda, Vanuatu, Yemen, and Zimbabwe.
During the presentations, other UN member states and stakeholders can raise issues, and we look forward to ensuring that LGBTI concerns are included in these discussions.

Senior Programme Officer on UN Special Procedures and Sustainable Development Goals
To do so, ILGA World will be attending the HLPF this year! We are supporting LGBTI activists from Namibia, Zimbabwe and Kenya as they present their spotlight reports during the VNRs of their countries, so stay tuned to our website and social media accounts to read these spotlight reports and learn more about LGBTI inclusion in these countries.
We are also part of the LGBTI Stakeholder Group, a coalition of LGBTI organizations advocating for inclusive sustainable development that has been officially recognized by the UN under the category of ‘Other Stakeholders.’ With our partners, we will conduct Side Events on the margins of the HLPF on LGBTI perspectives on connections between poverty, food security, climate change, inclusive societies, and global partnerships, as well as on peace, justice and strong institutions and the potential of the ‘Pact for the Future’ for LGBTI communities.
Finally, we will meet representatives of UN member states, UN bodies and agencies, and various Major Groups and Other Stakeholders to renew our commitments and partnerships to advance LGBTI-inclusive sustainable development together.
