Hello everyone!

Welcome to ILGA World’s informative video series about the Sustainable Development Goals.

In this video of our SDG series, I’m going to talk about Sustainable Development Goal number 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

SDG 6 aims to ensure access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) for all. To achieve this, several targets must be met, such as ending water scarcity, reducing pollution to improve water quality, ensuring water-use sustainability, and supporting local communities in water and sanitation management.

LGBTI persons face unique challenges in accessing safe water, sanitation and hygiene. Due to discrimination, family rejection, or poverty, some LGBTI people are unhoused or driven to temporary housing, where WASH facilities are inadequate and unsafe. In emergency settings, where WASH resources are scarce, LGBTI people may be overlooked, and the structural lack of access to safe and dignified health care puts LGBTI people at a higher risk of facing hygiene and health issues and harassment while public restrooms that are not gender-inclusive expose trans and non-binary people to violence or even arrest and detention.

SDG 6 can only be achieved when LGBTI people can access clean and adequate water and sanitation without threatening their safety and well-being.

Our website, ilga.org provides further resources and information on the Agenda 2030’s potential opportunities for LGBTI advocacy and it is a great starting point if you want to learn more.

You can also drop us a message at [email protected] if you have any questions about the SDGs or if you think we can help you with advocating for LGBTI issues where you’re from.

Thank you so much for watching, and see you soon for our next video.
