In a world where we often face discrimination, violence, and erasure, the act of experiencing and celebrating queer joy is revolutionary.

The last few years in LGBTI advocacy have seen both victories and the regression of laws and policies to protect the existence and rights of our communities in all their diversity.

In addition, queer narratives are often centred around struggle and hardship, which, while important to acknowledge, do not fully capture the richness of our existence. Queer joy is a powerful force that fosters resilience, builds community and asserts the right to happiness and fulfilment.

Queer joy manifests in countless ways: the warmth of chosen family, the exhilaration of self-expression, the simple comfort of being seen and accepted.

It is found in Pride parades, queer art, music, and literature, in small everyday victories, and in spaces where authenticity thrives.

It is the laughter shared among friends who understand each other deeply, the freedom of embracing one’s identity without fear, and the hope that comes with seeing queer love and success normalised.

Queer joy is necessary, beautiful, and transformative

More than just a feeling, queer joy is an act of defiance against oppression – especially in the scary times we are living in.

It is a refusal to be defined solely by pain and a declaration that we deserve to thrive, not just survive.

By uplifting and amplifying our joy, we contribute to a world where individuals are celebrated for who they are, not just tolerated.

It reminds us that being LGBTI – wherever you sit within the acronym or beyond – is not just about overcoming adversity: love, community, and the limitless possibilities of a life lived freely.

So, this International Day of Happiness, dedicate some time to reliving a happy moment that defined your existence. Hug someone, send a message of happiness, and let’s all find time to smile today.
