ILGA World at the 68th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68)

The 68th Commission on the Status of Women is about to start at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and ILGA World will be there!

The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the main global intergovernmental body dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

This year, the 68th session of the CSW will take place from 11 to 22 March 2024 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

ILGA World will be there, too, collaborating with other organisations and the LBTI Caucus at large for parallel events around this year’s theme and the upcoming Summit of the Future. Join us!

Eradicating poverty & advancing economic inclusion for the LBTI community

A parallel event by the LBTI Caucus, co-sponsored by the UN LGBTI Core Group

When: Friday 15 March, 12:30 – 2:00 PM EST
Where: ACC Guild Hall

Current financial systems and structures fail lesbian, bisexual, trans, intersex, and gender non-conforming persons in their economic empowerment and lead to disproportionate rates of poverty among these communities. Punitive laws against LBTI persons and outdated heteronormative institutions exacerbate the situation and perpetuate systemic discrimination. Concrete measures and supportive policies are needed to tackle these economic barriers and achieve progress for all. This session will focus on implementing strategies and institutional changes at the local, regional, and global levels to protect LBTI people’s economic rights and alleviate poverty.

An inclusive future for all: LBTI perspectives on the Summit of the Future

A parallel event by the LBTI Caucus

When: Monday 18 March, 8:30 – 10:00 AM EST
Where: Church Center of the UN

Against the backdrop of multiple ongoing crises, the world must adopt a “Pact for the Future” that is inclusive and sustainable. This pact will be meaningful if it includes the perspectives of “We the People”: those acutely affected by these crises and who thus can see unique and creative solutions. The insight of LBTI and gender non-conforming people are critical, alongside others who have different and potentially transformative future perspectives. This workshop is an opportunity to discuss and share priorities for a transformative global agenda in anticipation of the Summit of the Future.

The intersection of trans and sex workers rights: dismantling barriers to equality

A parallel event by The Sex Workers Coalition and ILGA World

When: Thursday 14 March, 2:30 – 4:00 PM EST
Where: CCUN 2nd Floor

Laws and policies explicitly against transgender women are being proposed in many places around the globe, and these laws combine with prohibitions on sex work to prevent our communities from earning incomes, thriving and even surviving. This in-person panel discussion will showcase sex worker and trans leadership from across the globe to discuss organising strategies for addressing this pushback on trans lives.

We will describe how laws restricting gender and sexuality, including sex workers and trans people, but more generally, limit women’s right to socio-economic self-determination. We will discuss strategies for strengthening our rights to defend our bodies, access to social services, and forums to protect our speech, art, and expression. We will also review areas of multilateral and global policies that affirm the rights of sex workers and the intersection of sex workers’ rights and the human rights of transgender women.
