Every year, 26 October holds special significance as Intersex Awareness Day, a day dedicated to shining a light on the human rights of intersex people and the struggles faced by the global intersex community.
This day serves as a rallying point for raising awareness, advocating for change, and promoting inclusivity and understanding in the fight for the human rights of intersex people.
During the past decade, significant legal developments have occurred at the international, regional and national levels that have improved the human rights protections of this community. However, the overwhelming majority of UN member States still lack legislation and policies to address these violations. The situation requires ongoing engagement with intersex human rights defenders to ensure that the civil society is best positioned to advocate for the human rights of intersex people.
What do we talk about when we talk about intersex?
Intersex people are born with variations of sex characteristics (such as genitals, reproductive organs, hormonal and chromosomal patterns) that are more diverse than stereotypical definitions of male or female bodies. Up to 1.7% of the global population is born with such traits; yet, because their bodies are seen as different, intersex children and adults are often stigmatised and subject to harmful practices – including in medical settings – and discriminated against.
Intersex Awareness Day exists to circulate knowledge, debunk misconceptions surrounding intersex individuals, and call focus to initiatives which shed light on the global situation for the human rights of intersex people.

The text reads: “Commemorate Intersex Awareness Day! Every year, 26 October is dedicated to shining a light on the human rights of intersex people and the struggles faced by the global intersex community.” The ILGA World logo is at the bottom right of the image.
ILGA World is proud to serve the global intersex community through empowering data-driven research. We will soon be publishing the Intersex Legal Mapping Report: research providing an overview and analysis of the legal landscape concerning intersex rights and issues internationally, with case studies on various national jurisdictions. This report is a comprehensive examination of laws, policies, and practices that affect intersex individuals and their human rights. It is derived from legislative data and qualitative data gained from interviews with intersex human rights defenders around the world.
Intersex Awareness Day underscores the urgency of advocating for the human rights of intersex individuals. Many within this community have endured non-consensual medical interventions aimed at aligning their physical attributes with societal norms. This day provides a platform to address these injustices and champions the right of intersex individuals to live authentically, free from unwarranted medical interventions.
This day serves as a solemn reminder of the rich diversity within our world. By championing the human rights of intersex individuals and embracing their right to live authentically, we collectively work towards a more equitable and inclusive world that celebrates the myriad facets of human diversity.
