Hello everyone!
Welcome to ILGA World’s informative video series about the Sustainable Development Goals.
In this video, I’m going to talk about SDG 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure.
SDG 9 targets three crucial aspects of sustainable development as it aims to build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive industrialization and foster innovation. However, LGBTI people continue to face discrimination and exclusion in these areas. In the United States, three in ten LGBTI adults have experienced discrimination in accessing financial services,1 while in Uganda, the decision of the World Bank to stop new lending after the passage of the anti-LGBTI law will have critical implications in advancing development in the country. In Central and West Asia and Eastern Europe, only 8.2% of LGBTI organizations reported receiving funds from their country’s governments, as opposed to 31.3% of LGBTI organizations in those countries reported receiving funds from a government of a Western European state2
In order for countries to enhance research and innovation, upgrade industries and develop technologies, they must end discrimination and ensure that LGBTI people get the education and training they need to take part in this process. Resilient infrastructure led by local communities is not achievable if LGBTI individuals fail to enjoy the right to education and have equal access to the labor market and inclusive innovation.
Finally, the goal of closing digital divides and securing universal access to the internet will never be met as long as online harassment and violence against LGBTI people thrive.
Our website, ilga.org provides further resources and information on Agenda 2030’s opportunities for LGBTI advocacy and it is a great starting point if you want to learn more.
