The last session of the year of the UN Human Rights Council starts today!

The 54th session will occur at the United Nations Palais des Nations in Geneva between 11 September and 13 October 2023.

ILGA World will be there for you, as always! We look forward to amplifying the voices of LGBTI activists and civil society worldwide.

We will make sure that sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics issues are addressed during discussions around arbitrary detention, the right to development, and the fight against slavery.

In addition, we will partner with other civil society organisations for two side events: one putting a spotlight on gender-based persecution of LGBTIQ people (with a special focus on Iran), and another on the human rights of intersex people.

During this session of the Council, the world will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action. In 1993, this ambitious document marked the
culmination of a long process of review and debate over the status of human rights machinery in the world, and featured concrete plans for the strengthening of human rights work around the world. Thirty years later, we will once again remind the Human Rights Council that implementing the Vienna Declaration means to ensure equal protection of human rights for all.

During this session of the Council, we will, once again, raise the voices of intersex communities worldwide, and we will highlight situations that require the Council’s attention regarding the human rights of people of diverse SOGIESC – especially in contexts where there has been significant backlash against the rights of our communities.

Throughout the 54th Human Rights Council, ILGA World will be there for our communities and ensure that our voices are heard.
