UNITED NATIONS TREATY BODIES: REFERENCES TO SEXUAL ORIENTATION, GENDER IDENTITY, GENDER EXPRESSION AND SEX CHARACTERISTICS: ANNUAL REPORT 2019

Issues affecting LGBTI persons worldwide are increasingly being considered by United Nations human rights bodies, research by ILGA World – The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association has shown.

The organisation’s Annual Treaty Bodies Report showed that in 2019 alone nine UN Treaty Bodies made 137 references to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESCin 66 observations and recommendations to 56 member States.

This sixth edition of United Nations Treaty Bodies: References to Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Gender Expression and Sex Characteristics was published by ILGA World. It is copyright-free provided you cite both the author and the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA World).

This report provides an analysis of references to sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics made by nine Treaty Bodies in 2019. An additional compilation of references with keywords is provided. The report also contains a section with an analysis of developments related to sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics in Treaty Bodies between 2014 and 2019.
