In relation to an ILGA World consultant being involved in protests in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand

As a value-based organisation, ILGA World stands by peaceful, non-violent protests. We do not endorse any violence of any kind against anyone.

People have every right to protest against those who, for years, have been actively promoting hate against trans people, one of the most disenfranchised and targeted communities. And we must remain non-violent as we denounce the violence of our opposition.

We are in contact with our colleague -  who, in their personal capacity, and in their non-work private time, attended the counter-protests in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland - and we are addressing with them how to move forward according to our internal procedures.

As a result of their protest, our colleague has been targeted by a horrific wave of death threats, doxing and hate speech online. This puts a spotlight on the oppression and violence trans people have endured for centuries. We are at the frontline dealing with the effects of incitement to hatred and violence against trans populations every day. We condemn these acts, and urge everyone to stop and not counter a protest with hate. We urged our colleague to cooperate with local authorities to address the situation.

In many places worldwide, an ongoing backlash against the human rights of women and LGBTIQ persons is a sad reality. Every day we see examples of how these phenomena are connected. We continue working to address them and to fight against violence against women in all their diversity.
