Following internal consultations, as well as with external stakeholders, ILGA World has signed the letter issued by the Association For Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) - There Is No Place for Anti-Trans Agendas in the UN issued on 18 May 2023. We, too, understand that the current position of the Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women mandate holder, goes against what our organisation and movement advocate for.
ILGA World has signed this letter in solidarity with our trans membership and communities as well as with our feminist allies. We firmly believe the anti-trans agenda, which expresses itself in multiple ways, endangers the rights of women in all their diversity. We also invite our member organisations to speak up, and to sign on the letter before 19 June 2023.
ILGA World, nevertheless, reiterates its commitment to evidence-based dialogue in appropriate spaces, including with those who challenge us in our views and the mandate holder at present. Democratic principles and dialogue are our core values, and we welcome more critical conversations grounded in international human rights law.
