Hello, everyone!
September is here, and the 51st session of the UN Human Rights Council is about to begin. We look forward to amplifying the voices of activists and civil society all around the world.The session will happen at the Palais des Nations at the United Nations in Geneva, between 12 September and 7 October 2022. But first, let’s take a look back.

Earlier this year, in July, the Council voted to renew once again the mandate of the Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. 1’256 organisations from 149 States and territories from all regions of the world supported a campaign to renew the mandate. So: thank you, to each and every one of you. You made this victory possible!

Also: did you know? The vote marked the first time that the Council adopted a resolution condemning law that criminalises consensual same-sex conducts and diverse gender identities!

Ok, back to the present now.

There will be plenty of occasions to talk about sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics issues during the upcoming session of the Council, and ILGA World will be there for you as always!

We will ensure that the voices of our communities are heard at the United Nations: we’ll deliver statements at  panels and general debates, and we will participate in interactive dialogues with Special Procedures mandate holders.

Here, we will address how contemporary forms of slavery affect LGBTI persons, especially those belonging to ethnic, religious, and linguistic minorities; and we will also focus on the human rights situations of Indigenous lesbian, bisexual and trans women.

During this session, intersex civil society will come to the front, calling on States to ban unconsented, medically unnecessary interventions on intersex infants and children. We will also call on the Council to conduct a global investigation on these human rights violations, and organise a side event to make sure their message is amplified!
