Gurchaten Sandhu, Director of Programmes
Hello, everyone!
It was so great to see so many of you at the last ILGA World Conference in May.
The 50th session of the Human Rights Council is here, and we are looking forward to amplifying the voices of activists and civil society all around the world.
The session will happen at the Palais des Nations at the United Nations in Geneva, between June 13 and July 8, 2022.
Here are how things will work.
Aigerim Kamidola - Junior Consultant - UN Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures and SDGs
There will be plenty of occasions to talk about gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics issues during this Human Rights Council, and ILGA World will be there for you as always!
We will deliver statements regarding the human rights of LGBTI persons in the General Debates and at UPR outcome sessions, ensuring the voices of our communities are heard at the UN. Here is what else you can expect from us.
Diego Quesada Nicoli - Junior Consultant - UN Human Rights Council and UPR
As we will hear reports of Special Procedures and participate in interactive dialogues with them, we will be putting a strong focus on health and on issues affecting women.
Also, the Independent Expert on SOGI will present its thematic report on health, and the Special Rapporteur on the right to health has prepared a report proposing a non-binary approach to understanding violence based on SOGIESC.
Gabriel Galil - UN advocacy, Human Rights Council and UPR
Importantly, the mandate of the Independent Expert on SOGI is up for renewal during this session! The resolution to renew the mandate for a second time was officially announced by the core group of the so-called LAC 7 States.Voting will take place on July 7 and 8.
Meanwhile, what can you do? Your organisation can join the hundreds of organisations worldwide calling on the mandate to be renewed!
Also, follow the #RenewIESOGI campaign on social media, ensure you share your thoughts about the importance of the renewal on social media, and stay tuned for more updates!
Chamindra Weerawardhana - Gender Identity & Expression and Sex Characteristics Programme
For the sixth year in a row, trans and gender diverse human rights defenders from all over the world will come together virtually to take part in the UN Trans Advocacy Week.
Trans Advocacy Week is a joint initiative of ILGA World, the Asia Pacific Transgender Network, TGEU, GATE, and RFSL.
This year the theme for Trans Advocacy Week is "Gender justice, peace and security".
Trans Advocacy Week is a tremendous occasion to zoom in on trans human rights issues at the United Nations, as the 50th session of the Human Rights Council takes place.
The programme for Trans Advocacy Week also includes trainings for this year's delegates, and also private meetings with Special Procedures mandate holders, and also a public event.
