ILGA World seeks a Senior Officer to join our Programmes Team to coordinate ILGA World’s advocacy and policy projects that engage ILGA’s regions. The work entails the coordination and implementation of our project on Decriminalisation in the Pacific and the Caribbean.

The position

ILGA World seeks a Senior Officer to join our Programmes Team to coordinate ILGA World’s advocacy and policy projects that engage ILGA’s regions. The work entails the coordination and implementation of our project on Decriminalisation in the Pacific and the Caribbean.

This 3-year project will assist LGBTI-led civil society organisations to build a coordinated approach to campaigning, incorporating advocacy and movement building activities with a focus on decriminalisation of a person’s sexual orientation and gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC). Although usually not specifically covered under criminalising laws, this project also will work with intersex civil society in intersectional ways that address how these laws affect persons with diverse sex characteristics and so we use the acronyms LGBTI and SOGIESC. The person also will support the Director of Programmes in coordinating advocacy efforts between the ILGA Regions and the global office and act as the point person for ILGA World engagement in the Protect Defenders EU project.

ILGA World’s advocacy and policy work in these contexts is highly collaborative with our members in the region and LGBTI human rights defenders from international, regional, and national levels. The successful candidate will have to be able to navigate multicultural environments, different sectors of civil society, and UN spaces alike.

The Senior Programme Officer report directly to the Director of Programmes.

The ideal candidate will start working on July 2022

  1. Coordinate and implement ILGA World’s project on Decriminalisation with a primary focus on the Caribbean and the Pacific (further regions are likely to be added), this includes:

    1. Support the building of capacity of local, national groups, LGBTI-led CSOs and regional organisations to develop, lead and implement more strategic decriminalisation campaigns
    2. Organise and deliver trainings for level on campaigning, policy, and advocacy work for national and regional  stakeholders
    3. identify and build strategic partnerships and alliances between stakeholders and movements
    4. Work in collaboration with the communications staff at ILGA to support national level campaign efforts
  2. Coordinate engagement with ILGA World regions in regard to policy and advocacy work including connecting global level advocacy efforts
  3. Work together with colleagues from the UN Team in engaging ILGA world regions in UN level work
  4. Provide technical support to ILGA World regions in their engagement with global level
  5. Coordinate ILGA World’s work in the context of the Protect Defenders EU project
  6. Attend and contribute to conferences, seminars, and meetings on behalf of ILGA World
  7. Work as a part of the ILGA World staff team
  8. Perform other duties as required
  • ILGA World is currently introducing a flexible workplace regime – under the new rules this position can be implemented remotely and does not require relocation to Geneva, Switzerland
  • ILGA World remunerates under a three-tiered salary matrix structure. The annual salary being offered for the post ranges between CHF 65,520 and CHF 82,800 for a 100% position depending on location.
  • In addition, ILGA World offers 25 days annual leave and contributions to health care costs
  • ILGA World operates under the flexible working system, that among others include flexible working hours
  • The weekly working time is 37.5 hours on a 100% position

 

The successful candidate 

  • has at least 3 years of experience in advocacy and/or policy work on local, national, or regional levels;
  • has good knowledge of UN human rights mechanisms and NGO opportunities within them;
  • has experience with advocacy campaigns
  • has sound experience with programme and project coordination, including planning, budgeting, and reporting;
  • has good understanding of living realities of different LGBTI communities around the globe;
  • must be able to communicate in English with high proficiency;
  • is able to communicate with the working level of proficiency in at least one language widely used in countries outside of the Global North, such as Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese, or Swahili;
  • is able to navigate multicultural, challenging and sensitive environments;
  • shares ILGA World’s mission.

The successful candidate ideally

  • holds a degree in law, human rights, political science, international relations, social sciences or related field or 5-7 years of relevant experience in lieu of a bachelor’s degree;
  • has some experience in developing and implementing training programmes;
  • has direct experience within LGBTI or sister movements, including but not limited to feminism, anti-racism, (dis)ability, etc;
  • has relevant experience in working in diverse international and multicultural teams.

We encourage applications from persons with diverse SOGIESC and from persons living in the Global South. Due to the geographic scope of the project, preference will be given to applications from the Pacific region and the Caribbean.
