This is an exciting new senior-level position within ILGA: the world federation of LGBTI organizations.

ILGA is seeking a visionary, internationally-focussed leader, deeply passionate about the rights and dignity of LGBTI persons to head-up ILGA’s programmatic work, leading and supporting the existing programmes teams to collectively deliver ILGA’s vision and strategic plan. The Director will manage the effective implementation of programmes and will have direct supervision of currently 4 team members situated in Geneva.

The ideal candidate is a highly experienced manager and an advocate of people’s rights, sensitive to diverse identities, experiences, groups, cultural and regional contexts. The position is located in Geneva but significant travel can be expected. This senior position reports to the Executive Director and will oversee, lead and build ILGA’s collection of programmatic work.

ILGA and its programmatic work

ILGA’s current programmatic work includes, but is not limited to:

  • dedicated work on gender identity and gender expression issues at the international level
  • facilitating strategic engagement with the UN Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and other key experts at the international level
  • engaging in smart and targeted advocacy at multiple levels to support, build and protect the rights of LGBTI persons, including coordinating mass and global mobilizations at key moments
  • supporting LGBTI defenders to utilise different aspects of the United Nations system, including the Sustainable Development Goals, the Human Rights Council, the Universal Periodic Review, the Special Procedures, the Treaty Bodies, the World Health Organization and other aspects of the international systems.
  • a suite of cutting-edge annual-release research including the ILGA State Sponsored Homophobia Report, the ILGA-RIWI Global Attitudes Survey, the Trans Legal Mapping Report and UN Treaty Bodies Annual Compilations.

Throughout 2018, ILGA is developing its next strategic plan for the period 2019 to 2022, a strategic plan that will be adopted by the ILGA membership at the World Conference in Wellington, Aotearoa/New Zealand in March 2019. As a membership-based, LGBTI-led organization, responsive to the needs of LGBTI movements in all our queer and regional diversity, ILGA is ensuring that its programmatic work best-serves its members as it enters this next strategic plan period.

The ILGA office in Geneva is currently a team of seven staff, a consultant and three interns. ILGA expects this to grow to a team of 11 staff and four interns by the end of 2018.

The position

The Director of Programmes will provide programme vision and be a thought leader for the organization at a senior level. They will develop, implement and supervise ILGA’s various programmes in conjunction with staff and external partners.

The successful candidate will help build and grow ILGA’s programmatic capacity generally, exploring new avenues and opportunities for work, ensuring ILGA’s programmes are informed by and relevant to LGBTI communities as well as widely visible and promoted, sensitive to the needs of the global LGBTI movement and in-line with ILGA’s strategic plans.

The Director of Programmes will be a key organizational spokesperson and a member of senior management. They will have a strong awareness around gender and SOGIESC issues and a knowledge, sensitivity and wisdom around LGBTI movement dynamics. They will liaise with the Executive Director and Director of Finance and Administration to ensure that programmatic vision is embedded across the organization.

Committed to working collaboratively, the Director of Programmes will maintain relationships with a range of existing and potential allies, including LGBTI and other civil society, governments, international organizations, development agencies, media, and the general public. Where applicable, they will serve as a communications bridge across stakeholders.

The successful candidate will also develop existing and new relationships with key funders/donors of LGBTI programmes.

As a busy office with a small team, the selected candidate will be expected to work with other staff on team projects, including on ILGA conferences, other project work, communications and fundraising.

 

Remuneration and application process

ILGA remunerates under a salary matrix structure. The salary being offered for the post is CHF 105,600 based on a full-time (100%) position.
In addition, ILGA offers 25 days annual leave, an annual Geneva travel pass and a contribution to lunch expenses.
Some relocation support to Geneva is offered.
