On January 1st, 2016, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development officially came into force.
As important as understanding how Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relate to LGBTI rights is understanding how LGBTI activists can engage with and utilise the 2030 Agenda. As ILGA World strategically increase engagement with the SGDs, it is essential to build a sense of ownership of the goals among local LGBTI communities and ensure LGBTI participation in the SDGs implementation at all levels.
A significant opportunity for international LGBTI advocacy is the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York. This event takes place annually under the auspices of the UN Social and Economic Council and every four years under the auspices of the UN General Assembly. ILGA World is participating in the forum with members this year if the LGBTI Stakeholder group ensures critical SOGIESC issues are highlighted.
In the first video of the informative series, we provide a comprehensive overview of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum, which tracks and documents the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Hello, ILGA World family. Welcome to our new informative video series about the Sustainable Development Goals.
These are 17 goals of the 2030 Agenda that will guide all international development efforts of all nations until the year 2030.
In this first edition, we will talk about the High-Level Political Forum: the most important annual event to follow the implementation of the Agenda 2030.
The High-Level Political Forum is a United Nations platform for reviewing the Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs. Every year in New York, UN members States, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders gather to conduct an in-depth review of the implementations of the Agenda 2030 worldwide.
During the event, around five SDGs are prioritised under a specific theme, and many members States are called to present voluntary national reviews to showcase their in-country advancements on SDGs.
Here is how things will work this year: the High-Level Political Forum will be held from July 10 to July 19th and the specific theme will be “Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development at all levels. All SDGs will be reviewed. However, only five SDGs are considered priorities this year: SDG 6, about clean water and sanitation; SDG 7, about affordable and clean energy; SDG 9, decent work and economic growth; SDG 11, on sustainable cities and communities; and finally, SDG 17, partnership for the goals.
39* presenters will carry out voluntary national reviews: 13 from Europe, 11 from Asia Pacific, 4 from the Arab region, 6 from the Americas and 7 from Africa. To see the full list of the presenters, you can visit the official page of the High-Level Political Forum, which you can find in the caption of this video.
During the presentation of the voluntary national reviews, other countries and stakeholders can raise questions to the countries presenting. Therefore this is a great opportunity to highlight SOGIESC issues under the SDGs framework.
As always, ILGA World will be attending the High-Level Political Forum this year, collaborating together with the LGBTI Stakeholder Group to stand in and strengthen unity to advance the SDG priorities for our communities. In coordination with the LGBTI Stakeholder Group and other major groups, we will deliver statements on sessions and support several LGBTI advocates to participate during the voluntary national reviews of their countries. Throughout the whole High-Level Political Forum,
ILGA World and all the members of the LGBTI Stakeholder Group will be there, looking out for our communities and making sure that our voices are heard. If you want to know more about LGBTI advocacy and SDGs, you can check out our new articles that you can find on our website, ilga.org.
