on the occasion of the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia - A call to action for the rights of LGBTIQ youth"
Launched on IDAHOBIT day 2021, the Office of the Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth (OSGEY), the UN Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity (IE SOGI), ILGA World and the Global Queer Youth Network has implemented the Queer Youth Dialogues; a programme of activity with the aim of buiding a stronger global youth movement for LGBTIQ human rights, with more resources, support and power.
The 12-month series of activities have focused on advocacy towards the UN and Member States, in collaboration with youth LGBTIQ activists and civil society organisations (CSOs) from all over the world, in a fully virtual programme of activity that allowed participants to learn, share, meet, plan, and celebrate.
As of March 2022, the Dialogues have invited 20 young LGBTIQ speakers from all continents, who have had the opportunity to share their experiences with speakers from UN Habitat, UNDP, UNFPA, UN Women, UNESCO, UN Globe and the Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO). In total, seven high-level advocacy sessions have happened so far, with a live audience of over two hundred people.
While the initiative comes to an end, this final session of the Queer Youth Dialogues will launch the initiative’s outcome report, and will provide a platform for different stakeholders, especially Member States, to reflect on the call to actions put forward by the young participants. Speakers will share their perspectives on the actions that need to be taken within the UN system and beyond in order to enhance and promote the human rights of LGBTIQ youth, as well as strengthen structures for their meaningful participation in decision-making processes.
