At the 39th session of the UN Human Rights Council, ILGA and the Permanent Mission of New Zealand hosted a side event on Global Research on Trans Rights, bringing together speakers from ILGA and Transgender Europe (TGEU) to discuss the methodologies, politics and context of current research on trans issues.

The panel consisted of Lukas Berredo (Transrespect v Transphobia Project Coordinator, TGEU), Hua Boonyapisomparn (Intern, Gender Identity and Gender Expression Programme, ILGA) and Lucas Ramón Mendos (Senior Research Officer, ILGA), and was moderated by Zhan Chiam (Coordinator, Gender Identity and Gender Expression Programme, ILGA).

The panelists are actively engaged in both trans-specific and LGB-specific research, and use desk-based legal research, anti-colonial community-based research, and comparative data collection. Research projects the panelists are involved in are Transrespect v Transphobia Worldwide (Transgender Europe),Trans Legal Mapping Report (ILGA), State-Sponsored Homophobia report (ILGA) and Criminalisation of Trans People (Human Dignity Trust, upcoming).
