Demet Gümüş (she/her) is a Turkey-born human rights activist with an MA degree in Human Rights and Multi-level Governance earned from the University of Padova (Italy), where she also worked as a research assistant. She wrote her final dissertation on trans prisoners in Turkey and their access to justice through national, supranational, and international human rights mechanisms. Among her research areas of interest are strategic litigation for SOGIESC and gender equality issues, and civil society engagement for the execution of ECtHR judgments as well as environmental policies from an eco-feminist perspective.
Before joining ILGA World, she worked at the European Implementation Network (EIN) and Human Rights Center "Antonio Papisca". Besides volunteering in several civil society organizations and civic-space platforms, she has taken leading and assisting roles in organizing a sheer number of events, conferences, and various types of gatherings in multiple countries including but not limited to Turkey, Italy, Spain, Serbia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
She is a keen oarswoman and sailor.
