IT support - Internship opportunity at ILGA World

ILGA World seeks an IT Support Intern. 

This call is an exciting opportunity to join ILGA World, the global LGBTI membership-based organisation with more than 1,700 member organisations in over 160 countries. Anyone with dedication to - and experience regarding – human rights of and social justice for persons of diverse sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions and sex characteristics who meets the requirements set out below is welcome to apply.  

The internship is an excellent opportunity for somebody interested in human rights and LGBTI issues and wants to gain IT-related work experience within an international human rights organisation that represents LGBTI organisations, communities, and movements on a global stage. It is aimed at LGBTI persons who are current IT or technology students or at an early stage of their career in technology.  

The internship is six months long and will start in August 2021. The internship is virtual, and the intern can be based anywhere with a stable internet connection. The exact working hours and dates can be flexible, but a candidate should be available to work up to a full-time basis (30-37.5 hours/week). The intern receives a financial compensation of CHF 750 per month. 

The intern will provide assistance to ILGA World’s staff, interns and the board. They will mainly work with and report to J. Andrew Baker, Coordinator, Donor Relations, MEL & IT. 

General tasks and requirements for all ILGA World internships 

  • demonstrate clear commitment and enthusiasm for organisational values, goals and policies, including those related to equality 
  • have experience (paid or unpaid) in supporting NGOs (especially within the LGBTI Sector) with IT tasks 
  • be well organised, motivated and able to work remotely 
  • have a good internet connection during the internship 
  • have a professional level of written and spoken English 

and preferably should also: 

  • speak and write in another UN language at a good level, preferably Spanish 

Specific tasks and requirements for the IT Support Internship 

The successful candidate must: 

  • be a recent graduate of a business, communications or technology-related program, or a current undergrad or graduate student  
  • Have proficiency in computer applications and software, including macOS, Office 365 services, SharePoint, VPNs, and other software that support digital security and hygiene 
  • Be able to write and speak with staff, other interns (and sometimes board members) in English 
  • Demonstrate multicultural and LGBTI-specific sensitivity 
  • Have the capacity to work in a team and autonomously; ability to follow-up on time and multitask; be able to manage their own time and meet internal deadlines 
  • Be organised and have high attention to detail 
  • Have a proactive and enthusiastic approach 
  • Have good interpersonal skills and a customer-oriented attitude
     

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following tasks: 

  • Assisting with responding to IT-related inquiries from staff, interns and other users, including sourcing effective resolutions to issues and problems 
  • Contribute to ILGA World’s technology and participate in policy, procedure, and standards development. 
  • Support the Identification, monitoring and reporting of system issues, and test resolution of those issues 
  • Monitor antivirus, VPN and other digital hygiene software and updates  
  • Support the maintenance of backup systems and procedures to ensure data security. 
  • Assist in maintaining inventory records and documentation for equipment. 
  • Research and evaluate products to assist in the selection and purchase of equipment and software for ILGA World 
  • Aid internal users in determining appropriate software solutions to meet needs. 
  • Develop and provide user training for software and hardware in collaboration with the Coordinator of Donor Relations, MEL & IT. 
  • Provide technical support for staff when required 
  • Perform other duties/projects as assigned. 
     

Internship conditions 

  1. The internship is virtual; no relocation to Geneva is expected or supported by ILGA World 
  2. The internship is six months long and will start in August 2021. The exact working hours and dates can be flexible, but a candidate should be available to work up to a full-time basis (30-37.5 hours/week). 
  3. The intern will receive a compensation of CHF 750 per month for the duration of the internship 
  4. The successful intern will have opportunities to work with the staff of ILGA World and to support the digital security of LGBTI activists around the globe 
  5. Due recognition in publications and activities to which the intern has contributed will be given.

Filling out the application form

  • Language: The application pack should be completed in English. Both shortlisted tasks and interviews will also be conducted in English (though other declared language skills may be tested). 
  • Other documents or materials. Do not attach a CV, pictures, or any additional document, as they will not be used. Failure to respect this rule will negatively impact your score. For any IT-related certifications, you can list your certifications in the relevant question of the application.

Process after application 

We expect to communicate our decision to shortlist a candidate by 16 July 2021. Please bear in mind that if you have not been contacted by the end of July, this means that you have not been shortlisted for the position. 

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a written or technology implementation task sent on 16 July 2021. The deadline to deliver the task is 23 July 2021. 

Interviews with candidates admitted to the final stage of the selection process are expected to occur in the week of 26-30 July 2021. 

The interview itself will last approximately 45 minutes. 

The selected candidate will be notified in early August 2021.
