EQUALITY ADVOCATE'S MARRIAGE DEFENDED FROM CHRISTIAN LOBBY ATTACKS

in AUSTRALIA, 04/05/2012

Leading Australian marriage equality advocate, Alex Greenwich, has been defended from the suggestion that his up-coming same-sex marriage in Argentina is politically motivated.

In a comment regarding today's Senate marriage equality hearing in Sydney, posted on social media site, Twitter, Australian Christian Lobby chief of
staff, Lyle Shelton wrote,

"Alex Greenwich not at Senate Inquiry because today he is in Argentina getting 'married'. Coincidental or emotional leverage?"

Australian Marriage Equality campaign director, Rodney Croome, said,

"Like other couples, Alex and his fiance have decided to marry for personal reasons, and they have been planning their wedding for a year."

"Mr Shelton's comments show his lack of respect for the love and commitment in same-sex relationships and lower the tone of the marriage equality debate."

Mr Croome said Mr Shelton's comments reflect the Australian Christian Lobby's attempt to portray the movement for marriage equality as disingenuous.

"Many gay and lesbian Australians, including Alex and his fiance, wish to marry because they value marriage, not to make a point."

Mr Greenwich is the national convener of Australian Marriage Equality. He has won support for the issue across Australian society thanks to his respectful and upbeat advocacy.

The Senate inquiry received 75,000 submissions with 60% supporting reform. The hearing continues tomorrow in Melbourne.
