Asian Men Unmasked in Sydney

in AUSTRALIA, 01/03/2012

A hot new photography exhibition and book is set to explore what it means to be Asian, male and gay – proving that ‘sexy comes in many colours.’

After months of work chatting with and taking photos of a variety of gay Asian guys, A-Men is unveiled tomorrow (Tuesday 28 Feb) with the Unmask photo exhibition from 6:30pm until 9:30pm at Oxford Street’s District 01 gallery, featuring a live show from Dyan Tai.

Then from 10pm at Midnight Shift, meet A-Men’s models, volunteers and photographers at the official launch party, with DJ Frankie Shin spinning his discs and including a fashion runway show as well as music and cultural dance performances.

Members of the LGBT Asian community will also march in the Mardi Gras Parade this Saturday, celebrating the year of the dragon and show the world that Asian people make an increasingly vital and dynamic contribution to our communities.

Created by ACON’s Asian Gay Men’s Project, A-Men aims to capture the crossroads of art, sexuality and cultural identity.

“Through our program of Mardi Gras events this year, we’re seeking to examine what being Asian and gay means to people here and now,” says A-Men’s organiser Min Fuh Teh.

“Being a minority within a minority is a significant experience for many Asian GLBT people and something with which many often struggle,” he explains.

“In some Asian communities, it can be hard to address something as taboo as the issue of sex – especially gay sex – but not talking about it encourages a sense of disempowerment, and that can lead to all kinds of issues in terms of sexual health.”
