AMSHeR: Fellow, Policy And Law Programme

THE POLICY and Law Programme of the African Men for Sexual Health and Rights [AMSHeR] seeks a fellow to support its regional advocacy activities on sexual orientation and gender identity in Africa. Application deadline: 28 February 2013

The fellow will be specifically involved in the following activities of the Policy and Law Programme –
1. Regional advocacy at the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights;
2. Initiatives engaging mainstream civil society organisation on, and entrenching sexual orientation and gender identity in national and regional human rights discourse;
3. AMSHeR’s Emergency Response and Contingency Mechanism for LGBTI persons and human rights defenders [HRDs] facing prosecution in African countries;

4. Developing policy briefs and other documents on sexuality, sexual orientation, gender identity, human rights and HIV for various national and regional policymakers acAross Africa.

Qualification
The fellow should ideally be –
1. A graduate or post-graduate student in the concluding part of their academic programme [Masters or PhD level]
2. Be proficient in English and French. Proficiency in another Africa Union language especially Portuguese or Arabic is an advantage.
3. Currently working on sexuality, sexual orientation and gender identity, the human rights of LGBTI persons, HIV and human rights or related fields as the focus of his/her graduate or postgraduate research.
4. A lawyer or have a legal or policy background
5. Immediately available

Stipend
A small stipend will be provided to cover basic living cost and transport. Work-related travel during the fellowship will be fully covered by AMSHeR. Living expenses in Johannesburg is considerably high so candidates are encouraged to seek addition funding from other sources to support the fellowship.

Location and Duration
The fellow will be based at AMSHeR regional secretariat in Johannesburg with some travel to AMSHeR sub-regional office in Dakar, Senegal. The fellowship is for eight [08] months starting from March 2013 till October 2013.
