The gay couple that held their engagement in Blantyre on Saturday has been arrested by the Police on Monday.
The gay couple that held their engagement in Blantyre on Saturday paid the price for coming into the open about their sexuality when Blantyre Police arrested them yesterday for engaging in an indecent act. The two, Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Mojenza, were arrested in their home in Chirimba, according to Southern Region Police spokesperson Dave Chingwalu. As we went to press, Chingwalu said the couple was still being interrogated. Said Chingwalu: “They were picked just after lunch hour and have not been charged yet but could be based on Section 156 of the Penal Code. They are currently at Blantyre Police.”
Section 156 of the Penal Code reads: “Any male person who, wether in public or private, commits any act of gross indecency with another male person, procures another male person to commit any act of gross indecency with him, attempts to procure the commission of any such act by any male person with himself or with another male shall be guilty of a felony and be liable to imprisonment for five years with or without corporal punishment.” The engagement, held at Mankhoma Lodge along the Kameza-Chileka Road, attracted an inquisitive crowd that was more amused than supportive. The couple said they met at church which, they said, would also officiate their wedding next year.
