Maharashtra to include transgender issues in women's policy

in INDIA, 20/01/2013

The state government will include issues of sex workers and transgenders while framing its women's policy, said Varsha Gaikwad, minister for women and child development. Gaikwad said the government plans to announce the policy on March 8, International Women's Day.

On Wednesday, a committee debated on issues of sex-workers, transgenders, health, environment and ways to create awareness about women's issues. Preeti Patkar, activist and convener of NGO Prerna that works among sex-workers, said the government needs to address issues of human trafficking, pushing young girls into prostitution, issues of women who are in the trade, their civic rights and rehabilitation. "From prevention to protection to rehabilitation—I fear the policy may not be able to tackle all issues. It may just look at those in the trade," she said.
