The 1st World Outgames will take place in Montreal, Canada between 29 July and 5 August 2006
One of the most exciting events of 2006 will undoubtedly will take place in Montreal, Canada between 29 July 2006 and 5 August 2006. I am of course talking about the 1st World Outgames, Rendez-Vous, Montréal, 2006
Like majority, my relation to sports is at the best is as a spectator, and at the worst is zero. However I just came back from a meeting of the "Scientific Committee" of the Outgames, and I am buzzing with enthusiasm, because what I saw and heard in Montreal is promising to be one of the best lgbt events ever. And the contagious enthusiasm and commitment to internationalism of the team in Quebec made even me to feel to take part at the games. I feel; maybe I can train a bit and swim or wrestle (I used to wrestle when I was young like most Turks of my generation) even at the age of 54 (which I will be at the time of the games). I was at this meeting with many friends from all over the world representing many organisations and from many different countries; from China to USA, and believe me the enthusiasm was very much shared. For example, Joke Swiebel, Member of European Parliament (MEP) was there too, like me she has also surprised herself that Rendez-Vous, Montréal, 2006 made her to want to cycle at the age of 63 she told me. However what made people like I and Joke get really excited was the importance which the organisers attach to the political and cultural events around the games and their understanding the link between sports and the desire of the lgbt people to change the world. Hence it has been decided to have a conference just before the games: "conference of, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) rights The Right to Be Different". It was very satisfying for me to see many ILGA activists, organisations and trade union colleagues to be present at this gathering. This conference will bring together many activists and organisations from all over the world and the trade union track of it for example, will be an excellent third addition following the footsteps of "Homosexuality and Work Conference, Amsterdam", and "Workers Out Conference, Sydney".
The Rendez-Vous Montréal 2006 Organizing Committee – 1st World Outgames, is a non for profit organization. The Games will be held from 29 July to 5 August 2006 with more than 16,000 participants in the sport, cultural and conference programmes. Thirty three sports disciplines will be represented during seven days of competitions. Athletes from around the world and from over 100 different countries are expected. Opening and Closing ceremonies will cap off the sports competitions, open to all. An international gay sport and cultural Rendez-Vous not to be missed!
