Global Action for Trans* Equality is hiring a policy officer HIV/AIDS in the Africa or Asia/Pacific regions.

Policy Officer HIV/AIDS Position Description

The Policy Officer HIV/AIDS will be responsible for developing and implementing GATE’s agenda for HIV/AIDS policy and advocacy work for trans*identities at the international level with international organizations, such as UNAIDS, key governments, bi- and multi-lateral organizations, and funding agencies. The goal will be a supportive policy environment that ensures quality HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care services at individual, community, and regional levels for trans*individuals. 

The work will consider overall health and wellbeing of trans* communities, in addition to HIV/STI and sexual-health related issues. A careful attention will be given to key gaps in current HIV prevention models; for example, failure to recognize the distinct needs of trans* communities and conflation of trans* identities with MSM, leaving out trans* masculine identities, and a lack of focus on overall health and wellbeing in addition to HIV/STI and sexual health.

The Policy Officer HIV/AIDS will be required to carry out policy analysis and research; to develop strategies for advocacy, develop communications and build networks; strategize capacity building for trans* activists, organizations and networks; create program-related documentation including policy briefs, abstracts for international conferences, and process documentation and reporting. The Policy Officer will do this towards furthering trans* equality in the context of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment.

The Policy Officer HIV/AIDS will be based will in Africa or Asia/Pacific, and their core focus will be on the intersection of HIV/AIDS and trans*identities.
The candidate should be committed to equality, health and wellbeing of trans* communities and have demonstrated core competencies and experience in the following:

• Developing and implementing policy proposals and strategies
• Developing and conducting advocacy initiatives or campaigns at international, regional or national levels
• Building alliances and coalitions to support advocacy and policy development
• Developing individual and organizational capacity to advocate for trans* people’s human rights

Qualifications and other requirements:

• A solid knowledge of standards of trans* people’s human rights, equality, and health issues, specifically HIV/AIDS prevention, as they relate to trans*communities
• 3-5 years’ experience in program management
• Excellent communication skills (writing and presentation), including a versatile command of written and spoken English and knowledge of at least one other language
• Strong analytical, research and strategizing skills
• Strong self-organization skills, and ability to follow-up on time and multitask
• Must be able to self-start and work with colleagues in different locations
• Experience working in an NGO and/or another human rights institution

 
Additional requirements:

• Must be residing in Asia/Pacific or Africa and legally able to work
• Ability to work from home or find shared office space
• Travel required (up to 30% of work time)

Gross salary:

• GATE offers a contract for the duration of 1 year, with the possibility to renew, depending on funding. There will be a proof period of 3 months.
• Remuneration is commensurate with experience, local comparable salaries and international travel requirements.
• Projected starting date: June 1, 2012
