Unbearable Witness: How Western activists (mis)recognize sexuality in Iran

Scott Long's paper (Routledge 2009) provides insights on Western reading or misreading of sexuality in Iran. He focused on the cases of state-defined crimes relating to same-sex behaviour in Iran. Scott Long was the director of LGBT Rights Program of Human Rights Watch.

Long studied the case of Makwan Mouloudzadeh was xecuted in 2007 for alleged involvement in a rape which happened ten years ago, as well as recent images and alleged rights abuses in Iran. Long used news reports and statements from NGOs in order to analyze how gay and lesbian activists in the West misinterpreted the context and reduced the scope of rights violations in a serch for 'gay' identity and for 'homophobia.'
