Re-election of the conservative Howard Government

Gay fears attacks from new Howard Government

Australian gay activists say they fear renewed attacks on the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people following the re-election of the conservative Howard Government.

Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group spokesperson, Rodney Croome, said that the possibility of Government control of the Senate together with fundamentalist Christian party, Family First, and the election to Parliament of strident anti-gay campaigners like Michael Ferguson meant even the most basic human rights of sexual minorities are up for grabs.

"The recent same sex marriage ban was a walk in the park compared to what's in store", Mr Croome said.

"Gay parenting, gay characters on television, gay partnership registries and gay anti-bias laws will all now be in the Government's sites", Mr Croome said.

Mr Croome applauded what he called "the gay marriage vote" in inner-Sydney.

"The much higher than average swing to the Greens in Sydney's 'gay seats' is a direct result of anger over the Labor Party's support for the Howard Government's same sex marriage ban earlier this year."

"Labor must heed this message and develop a stronger, unqualified policy on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality."

Mr Croome expressed deep disappointment over the election to Parliament of anti-gay campaigner Michael Ferguson.

"The practical, down-to-earth people of Ferguson's Tasmanian electorate will be shocked by the fundamentalism of their new representative."

"Already Ferguson has thanked Jesus for his election."

"It will come as a surprise to many Launceston residents that Christ is registered to vote in Bass."
