UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon spoke in Geneva on September 10th, to the opening of the XXI session of the United Nation’s Human Rights Council (HRC). In his speech he highlighted the first debate the HRC held on sexual orientation and gender identity in March 2012. Stating that this should not be a one-time event, Ban Ki-Moon urged the UN to deepen its engagement on having LGBTI rights respected worldwide. >>>

Mr. Moderator, Distinguished panelists, I am honoured to address this panel on behalf of ILGA, which represents 917 lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex member organisations. This statement has also been endorsed by 284 NGOs from 90 countries, from diverse cultures and religions, and by mainstream allies and supporters from around the world. >>>

The United Nations Human Rights Council will hold the first-ever formal inter-governmental debate on violence and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people on March 7 in Geneva. >>>

"Gays threaten the continuation of the human race", Libya's delegate told a planning meeting of the UN Human Rights Council. It was the first appearance in the 47-nation body by the post-Gaddafi government, whose membership was restored in November following Libya's suspension in March. >>>

The Human Rights Council resolution 17/19 initiated by the South African Government, had requested the High Commissioner for Human Rights to prepare a study on human rights, sexual orientation and gender identity. >>>

Gay rights in Africa are in the spotlight again after the arrest of two men in Cameroon, allegedly for "looking feminine". There have also been reports of other arrests this year, with four men between the ages of 17 and 46 named, and Alice Nkom, lawyer and president of the Cameroonian Association for the Defence of Homosexuality (Adefho), who discovered in 2007 a gay man who had been jailed without trial for two years, has herself been threatened with arrest. >>>

With 29 votes in favour, 14 against and 5 abstentions, the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) granted today consultative status to the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA). >>>

"What started in March as a less fortunate text, which any of the 76 countries persecuting people on ground of sexual orientation or gender identity could have signed, has turned into an extraordinary resolution which acknowledges the existence of violence against LGBTI people and opens a very promising path for future actions” >>>

Today’s resolution is the first UN resolution ever to bring specific focus to human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and follows a joint statement on these issues delivered at the March session of the council. It affirms the universality of human rights, and notes concern about acts of violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This commitment of the Human Rights Council sends an important signal of support to human rights defenders working on these issues... >>>
