Banu polled 968 votes while Syed Khalim an independent candidate secured 808 votes. Banu was given the party ticket by the Congress considering her social service and her popularity in the ward.
It was tough for Banu to campaign in the ward with her opponents making life difficult for her. Banu told Deccan Chronicle after the victory that the victory margin could have been more had her opponents not launched a ‘false’ propaganda war against her. “Voters of the ward took no note of the propaganda and considered my social work such as helping people get ration cards and pension and voted for me.”
