Plans are full steam ahead to ensure that a Mr Gay Namibia represents that country at the 2012 Mr Gay World pageant in South Africa.
Despite recent setbacks with endorsements from LGBTI groups in Namibia, it would appear that the campaign to have a Mr Gay Namibia will be taking place regardless. The dates for the regional Competitions have been set as October 1, 2011.
The national finals, when the winner will be announced, will be on the November 26, 2011. According to an announcement on the Mr Gay Namibia Facebook page, “A new and proud Namibian Gay man is emerging.”
After the candidate is picked it is expected that he will carry the Namibian cause and compete for the Mr Gay World title in South Africa in April 2012.
The Mr Gay Namibia announcement reads in part: “Before South African independence, nearly 20 years ago there were no gay people in Africa, at least, according to the Apartheid government at that time.
“With the coming of Mr Nelson Mandela and his passion for true human rights, things have changed. It’s a pity that the rest of Africa is still stuck in pre-independent mode though.
“Just look at our neighbour, South Africa today. It has becomes the new preferred gay holiday destination and Cape Town is noted as the Gay Capital of Africa.
“The value of the Pink Rand has not been determined but it is estimated in millions. For this reason FNB (First National Bank) have decided to target the lucrative gay and lesbian client market.
The first elected Mr Gay World, Charl van den Berg has proven what a difference a good role model can provide to the community.
“The Mr Gay World competition is now entering its third year and we feel that our time has arrived to sit up and be noticed.”
