Petition on Sunila Abeyesekera

Sunila Abeyesekera is an extremely brave and barrier-breaking activist for women's, LGBT, and all human rights in Sri Lanka, arguably the most visible human rights activist in the country. She's been under steady threat and attack from the state (not for the first time) for the last several months. Please, if you can, sign this petition calling for her protection, as well as the safety of other Sri Lankan activsts.

Many of you know Sunila Abeyesekera, from INFORM/Sri Lanka. Sunila has been an advocate for sexual rights, LGBTI rights, women’s human rights and the rights of people in Sri Lanka. As is described in a Huffpost piece.

"In the past couple of months, the state-run media outlets in Sri Lanka have labeled Sunila a terrorist, a rebel sympathizer and a traitor, claiming that she sold out her country in exchange for U.S. dollars and international prestige. Private blogs and chat rooms have branded her much worse, attacking her personally, calling for her house to be burnt and her family harmed. As the smear campaign was mounting, Sunila was in Geneva testifying before the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), and it soon became clear that she could not safely return to her native country."
