In a strongly worded statement, the independent self-help group said: ‘Otherwise, the perception will be that the comments expressed by MM Lee, as a core member of the Cabinet, reflect the official position of the Government.’
Mr Lee’s remarks are from the book Lee Kuan Yew: Hard Truths To Keep Singapore Going, launched on Jan 21.
Among his remarks: ‘Muslims socially do not cause any trouble, but they are distinct and separate.’ Asked what Muslims could do to integrate, he said: ‘Be less strict on Islamic observances and say, ‘Okay, I’ll eat with you.”
He also said Malays would never close the gap in educational attainments with the Indians and Chinese, ‘because as they improve, the others also improve’.
‘That’s a fact of life,’ he added.
