This is an exciting internship with ILGA, the world organization of more than 1200 LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex) members’ organizations. The intern will provide assistance to ILGA’s United Nations Programme, in particular in preparation for and follow-up to the 36th Human Rights Council (HRC), the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process, and engagement with the UN Treaty Bodies (TB’s) and Special Procedures (SP’s). It is an excellent opportunity for somebody who has an interest in human rights and LGBTI issues and wants to gain experience in working on them within the framework of the United Nations human rights mechanisms.
The internship is for a period of five months, commencing on 1 August 2017 and ending on 31 December 2017. The exact working hours and dates can be flexible, but the candidate would ideally be available to work full-time.
- Assisting ILGA’s UN Programme staff in their work at the UN and with its human rights mechanisms.
- Liaising with ILGA members in preparation for TB’s and UPR sessions for their countries.
- Attending - in person or virtually - the meetings of Human Rights Council, Universal Periodic Review and Treaty Bodies at the UN and other relevant meetings and sessions.
- The intern will also monitor and report on the specific events scheduled for the period of the internship, such as 36th Human Rights Council in September, ILGA’s UPR advocacy week in October and December, 28th UPR Working Group sessions, 93rd and 94th sessions of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, 18th session of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, 68th session of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, 76th session of the Committee on the Rights of the Child, 62nd session of the Committee against Torture, 61st session of the Committee on the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and 121st session of the Human Rights Committee.
- Compiling SOGIESC-related references of Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures in 2017 and making an input for relevant reports by ILGA.
- Organising notification of ILGA members on the upcoming deadlines and opportunities related to Treaty Bodies, Special Procedures and UPR.
- Carrying out organisational and administrative tasks together with other UN Programme staff.
- Contribute to ILGA social media activities on the UN.
- Basic knowledge of the UN System, preferably with direct experience of engagement with the HRC, the UPR, SP’s or UN TB’s
- Particular interest on LGBTI/SOGIESC issues
- Highly organized
- Strong analytical skills
- A relevant Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent degree is desirable
- Fluent English. Other UN language skills are an asset.
- This is a virtual internship
- The intern will be expected to work from their current location
- The intern will receive a stipend of CHF 500 per month for the duration of the internship
- The successful intern will have opportunities to work with representatives of LGBTI organisations from around the world and other NGOs virtually and/or in Geneva.
- Due recognition in publications and activities which the intern has contributed to.
