I am a gay Maldivian. You can read about my life on that blog. Most of the people in Maldives don't understand what being gay really means. I believe that it's because more than 99% of them haven't met a real homosexual in person. What I've noticed is that, some people tend to be a bit more understanding when they find out that someone who they care about (like, a friend or a family member) is gay. They completely reject and make fun of gay Maldivians they meet online, but once they find out that someone close to them is gay, they start listening (a little, but it's kind of... worth it).
