It is quite funny that Norman Willacey was eventually suspended not for his action here but because he had an extramarital affair with an underage girl from his school. It turns out that this was not the first time that he has been accused of that. All of us have our vices and apparently it is quite fine if they involve the opposite sex. In Belize it is acceptable in many circles for an older man to have sexual intercourse with girls under 16 but two adults of the same sex cannot consent to doing the same.

I am presently a 23 year old belizean living with my partner for over 3 years now. We met and lived just over a year. We suffered many discriminations from the police. The most unusual one was a night that my partner and i were out siting at the park having dinner, at around 9 pm a police car drove up to us and stopped they started searching us . They then proceeded to arrest my partner without telling him anything. They drove off to the police station and i followed them there. When i arrived at the police station i started asking why were they arresting me they just stayed quiet and would not answer me. I kept repeating myself untill one of them said did you know that it is illegal and i can arrest you for being gay. I went on to dare him to arrest me but he didnt. I told him that he cannot arrest me because it is not illegal to be gay i have the right to choose who i want to be with. What is illegal is the act of sodomy which he cannot prove unless he has me examined by a physician, and without my concent it would be a violation of my right. For which i could sue him. That night i was insulted and cursed i was told that they wished he could light me on fire that he could shoot me etc etc. Only once did one of them dare to manhandle me grabbing me from my shirt i wanted him to hit me so i could have evidence and sue him but he didnt cause he was warned by his colegues who obviously knew who i was related to. You see my dad is a very well known figure in the town i used to live in since he is a government official or employee and has been for the 25 years. But my point is what if i was not recognised by the other police men what if i had not been educated or sencitized about my rights what would have happened. That happens to many people that i am sure have not been lucky enough to meet people like Caleb Orozco and the UNIBAM organization. I mentioned we had several instances where we were discriminated my house was broken into and also vandalized on several ocation and the police did nothing except laugh. I hope this serves in some way to make concience and for more people to actually take a stand be it if they are men, women, straight, gay, bisexual, closet or open. If it does not happen to you i am sure you have a son, daughter, friend, mom, dad, sister or brother, someone out there you love is being hurt, you just dont know it because of the fear that you yourself cause in them.

Dear Oscar,
Suicide is never the answer! Please don't hurt yourself it's not worth it. I'm sure that would hurt your parents more than finding out that you are having these feelings. These is nothing wrong with you, you don't need to act like nothing happened. If your not into women then that is how it is. You can't help how you feel and who you are attracted to. It's no ones business but your own. You don't have to be ashamed of it. If you tell your parents and they are not accepting of it then there is nothing more you can do. Move on with your life. It sounds like you are very close to your mom and you love her alot. She sounds like she would be ok with it. I don't know how things are in Belize with Gay Rights and Homosexuality. But things aren't any better here in the United States. Your biggest allies will be your family. Good luck to you! I hope all goes well and you make it out ok.
