UN PLANETA EN CRISIS. Sociologia.

After egalitarian marriage
Historical: For the first time ever, Argentina’s national population census will register lgtb couples and families and trans population.

For the first time in Argentinean history, the national population census will register lgtb homes and transgender population.
Activists from the sexual diversity movement met yesterday, July 29th, with the General Director of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC, by its Spanish abbreviation), Lic. Ana Edwin. During the meeting, the Institute informed its decision to register lesbian, gay and trans’ homes in the next population census, which will take place on October 27th, Wednesday. This is an unprecedented decision in Argentina’s censuses history and will allow for the registration of same sex couples whether they are legally married or not.

The meeting included several INDEC staff members, such as the Chief of the Census Operative, the Press Campaign responsible and the Training Area Director, among others. Gabriela Bacin from Lesmadres and Martín Canevaro from 100% Diversity and Rights also took part of the meeting, among activists from other GLTB organizations.

Before this decision, when the family member registered as family head had a same sex person as his/her partner, the electronic system that does the data processing considered that fact as “an inconsistency”, a mistake, and automatically changed the sex of that person, thus converting same sex couples in heterosexual couples in the records. This parameter was changed and from now on the same sex couples data will we be recorded in the final processing of the census, independently of these people being legally married or not.

Gabriela Bacin, from Lesmadres, an organization of lesbian mothers who decided to have their children in co-maternity, said: “Until now, there are no social diagnoses and social investigations about our families are still scarce. This statistical invisibility does exclude us from public policies, marking a gap of social, economical and political inequity for wide sectors of the population”.

Florencia Gemetro, from the same organization, added: “These changes constitute a big step forward in the visibility and recognition of GLTB families, allowing the possibility of formulating and adapting more diverse and inclusive pubic policies with the aim of improving life conditions for everyone”.

Martín Canevaro, President of 100% Diversity and Rights, considered that from this census on “we will be able to know how many of us are living in couples and in what conditions we live”. He added that “There is a compromise to apply, in a second stage, more accurate statistical instruments specifically designed for our collectives”. He informed they are working with INDEC on this issue: “We will take part in the training of the people who will carry out the census records, so they can incorporate a sexual diversity perspective and, at the same time, we will rise the GLTB community consciousness about the importance of being visible in the census, with complete freedom and security, in order for our families to be taken into account”.
Finally, trans activist Alba Rueda, also from 100% Diversity and Rights, affirmed that “the most important result of this meeting was the compromise to generate parameters that allow the recognition of the high social vulnerability in which transvestite, transsexual and transgender population lives”. This will be the very first time when official data about the situation of trans people in Argentina will be collected, especially regarding their economically productive activities. “We know that, unfortunately, there is a high percentage of the trans population living in state of prostitution; we hope that kind of information will be used to generate social and employment policies”, she said.

Hi, I am 66 years old and my partner is 36. We have had this relationship for 6 years now and we love each other deeply and are very happy. It was only this year, in February, that I came out of the closet in front of my two children, both married heterosexually. They accepted my sexuality and relationship naturally and reacted with a shrug and a warm hug. Our relationship father-son/daughter has improved greatly since. The only thing I regret regarding my coming out is not having done so much, much earlier. I feel so free since I told my children "I´m gay"

Hola i'm from a small town in Georia, USA. The gay scene is looked down upon, so its hard to open about it. I recently took a trip to Buenos Aires Argentina and would absolutely say it was a great place to be open about your sexuality. I had a really good experience there with this group called The OUT and About Pub crawl. They were a pub crawl just catered to the gay community. The staff was amazing and the bars and clubs we went to were awesome. I have never felt so comfortable walking around the streets of Buenos Aires with a bunch of others just like me. Good times. check them out at www.OutAndAboutPubCrawl.com
