Govt assistance set to change transgenders

in INDIA, 27/02/2014

The women and children welfare department has given an assistance of Rs 20,000 each to four transsexuals to make them self-reliant. The beneficiaries have also completed a beautician course in Manipal and decided to open a beauty parlour.

This is the first instance of transgenders utilizing government aid to open their businesses. Nagma, Kajol, Diamond and Priya will set up their parlour at Nadoor in Brahmavara. They earlier provided beautician services to brides at their homes.

Deputy director of the women and child welfare department Rajendra Bekal, the man behind the initiative to help transgenders in the Udupi district, wrote to the Karnataka State Women's Development Corporation and sought the grant. Though there are about 300 enrolled LGBT members at the Ashraya community organization in Udupi district, only nine persons came forward to seek assistance. They have been given Rs 20,000 each.

Transgender Rathnakara Panara will start a paan stall in Kukkikatte; Sanjiva Poojari will open a grocery shop at Vandse; Uday Poojari a petty shop in Vandse; Ashwij Rao wants to buy an autorickshaw and run it in Vandse; and Mrithyunjay wants to start a hardware shop in Kundapur.
