Hate crime in Belize

in BELIZE, 13/01/2014

At the time of his death Joseph Sanchez (18) was wearing a white sleeveless blouse and short green and black skirt; he is apparently a known cross-dresser. But police have not said whether they are investigating the incident from any angle other than a robbery attempt.

It was an explosively violent Sunday that saw three men killed and a fourth injured as well as a woman in the span of 24 hours. The murder of 18 year old Joseph Sanchez took place early in the morning around 1:50 a.m. According to police, the customer care representative of Laura Dunn Street was walking alone on Elston Kerr Street when he was approached by two men who tried to rob him.

It is not clear whether they got anything but they left him mortally injured with a stab wound to the center of the chest.

At the time of his death Sanchez was wearing a white sleeveless blouse and short green and black skirt, and reports to us are that he is apparently a known cross-dresser, but police have not said whether they are investigating the incident from any angle other than a robbery attempt.

Family members have told the press that Sanchez apparently received a telephone call and left his home just before the incident occurred. He had been there all day with family members after going out earlier on Saturday.

According to Sanchez’s brother he was normally picked up or dropped off and did not usually walk about. They say they were aware of and respected his decision to cross-dress and do not believe he was picked on as a result of that.
