The Inter-American Institute of Human Rights (IIHR) selects a new President

in COSTA RICA, 14/01/2014

IIHR Executive Director, Joseph Thompson, has announced the selection of Claudio Grossman as President of the Inter American Institute of Human Rights, effective January 1, 2014. He succeeds Sonia Picado.

Mr. Grossman, Chilean, is Professor of Law and Dean of the Washington College of Law of American University in Washington, DC and is Raymond Geraldson Scholar fors International Law and Humanitarian Law. He is Chairman of the UN Committee against Torture and has been Chairman of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and its Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples and on the rights of women. Prof. Grossman is the author of numerous books and articles on international law, human rights law and international organizations and has received many awards for his contributions in these areas, including the W. Henry Edgerton Civil Liberties Award of the American Civil Liberties Union of the National Capital Area, in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the promotion and protection of human rights and civil liberties, and the Lifetime Leadership Award from the Hispanic National Bar Foundation.

Mr. Thompson also announced that the IIHR General Assembly has agreed to name the following former Presidents as Honorary Presidents: Thomas Buergenthal, Sonia Picado and Pedro Nikken.

The IIHR warmly welcomes Prof. Grossman as its new President in the assurance that he will greatly contribute to the the future of the Institute.
