Ward for transgenders at all govt hospitals

in INDIA, 09/11/2013

In their fight for equal rights and equal treatment in society, the transgender community in the state has achieved yet another feat. After successfully obtaining ration cards, voter IDs, passports and driving licences in the recent past, the transgender community will henceforth get a separate ward for treatment at all hospitals run by Health and Family Welfare and Medical Education department across the state.

The state government last week passed an order stipulating that henceforth, all government hospitals at district and taluk headquarters and hospitals run by the medical education department must reserve a two-bed ward for the treatment of the transgender community members.

Further, the government has also relaxed the mandatory condition of producing a castration certificate to avail the benefits provided the state government. Instead, the transgenders can submit an affidavit along with a membership reference from either Sangama or the Karnataka Sexual Minorities Federation (KSMF) which are working for the uplift of the transgender community in the state.

The order on separate wards has been hailed by transgender activists Akkai Padmashali and Sonika who have been fighting for the cause for the last eight months. Akkai said, "We welcome this decision and thank the government. I and Sonika requested the government through Principal Secretary Madan Gopal about eight months ago to provide a separate ward for the treatment of our community people and finally the government has realised the importance of our demand and ordered in our favour."
