in INDIA, 21/10/2013

Transgenders Swapna and Srinidhi staged the protest demanding reservation for both trans-women and trans-men in education and employment; educational assistance; and preference for them in government jobs.

They urged the government and society to recognise them as alternate gender with the right to marry, adopt children and permission to appear for examinations conducted by TNPSC, UPSC, SSC and Bank Exams. Added to this, Swapna have also been fighting hard to appear for UPSC examination with female as her gender.

The transgenders also pointed out the humiliation they suffer in the society, and demanded punishment against their abusers. The police rushed to the spot and pacified the transgenders asking them to submit their petition to the district administration. Based on that, they later submitted the petition to the district collector. M Gopi Shankar of Shristi Madurai, who is working on gender-queer rights, accompanied the transgenders told media persons later that the society including medical fraternity and judiciary are not aware of the gender variants and are humiliating the alternate genders.
