Job position: ILGA is looking for a communication officer in Africa

ILGA, the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association is looking for a communication officer in Africa.

Coordinated by ILGA’s Communication Officer, this full time staff will follow, promote and implement ILGA’s communication plan in the region. He/She will engage with local LGBTI groups to strengthen regional networking and activism. He/She will also act as administrative support to Pan African ILGA, ILGA’s regional board in Africa. Most work will be carried out virtually and will look at enhancing ILGA’s new website (www.ilga.org) as an online resource providing services to the LGBTI activist community.

Candidates to these positions should be activists already involved with their community. He/She will be hosted by an existing local organisation. Experience in coordinating projects, in advocacy (at national, regional and international level), ability to work on his/her own through long distance coordination, good skills in proposal writing, reporting, ease with internet and web-administration are essential. Good knowledge of ILGA and PAI, their strategies and systems is required. Ability to manage various material in various languages (multilingualism would be a plus - French and English, eventually Portuguese) and/or able to establish effective agreements for translations of documents as the need dictates. Staff will be hired and managed by ILGA, under supervision of ILGA’s project coordinator and Pan African ILGA’s board.

The project is expected to be carried out over a period of ten months, ending April 2014. Applicants should send a document detailing their work experience and skills (including work in any activism related to social change) and a letter of motivation before July 25 2013.

Staff will follow, promote and implement ILGA’s communication plan in their own region by:

1 – mapping LGBT-related information and resources (LGBTI groups, media, civil society partners, NGOs, content makers, researchers on LGBT issues) for each country in their region.

2 – enriching ILGA’s directory of LGBTI groups.

3 – moderating and promoting existing regional emailing lists, both for their regional board, for activists and for the general audience. They will ensure bilingualism is implemented when needed so as to reach the widest possible audience and bridge the linguistic gaps existing between activists in some regions (Portuguese/Spanish in LAC, French/English/Portuguese in Africa).

4 – acting as a liaison between ILGA’s world secretariat and the ILGA federation in their region. They will act as administrative support to their regional board including the organisation of the biannual regional conference.

5 – linking with their regional board members to report their activities in ILGA publications. Write contributions and press releases under the supervision of both ILGA office and the regional board.

6 – promoting ILGA Trans e-newsletter, ILGA’s Lesbian newsletter and other ILGA publications including the State Sponsored Homophobia report and the maps, the Travel and residence regulation report for HIV + people to local groups and to the media, monitoring Transphobia, and Intersex matters. Securing participation of local groups to the annual update of the State Sponsored Homophobia report and its version as a map

7 – helping to organize ILGA regional conferences

8 – inviting groups to submit articles, events, job offers, training opportunities through ilga.org

9 – identifying and liaising with local LGBTI and the mainstream media

10 – organizing a consultative meeting and the regional conference
