Now, LGBT stands up for women’s safety

in INDIA, 12/07/2013

Kolkata’s lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender (LGBT) community at its 12th annual Kolkata Rainbow Pride on Sunday included “crime against women” as a key theme in their rally.

The inclusion coincides with the recent spurt in the number of rapes and other crimes against women in the state in the recent past. The route was from Hazara crossing to the Academy of Fine Arts. The turnout was around 700, much lower than a comparatively huge turnout in the 11th walk last year.

People from different walks of life marched through the streets of Kolkata, sharing a common resolve, “Atrocities against women must end”.

People travelled from various cities of the country to be a part of this movement. This year, several small towns of West Bengal such as Chandernagore and Islampur also joined in the Pride Walk to voice against the various forms of violence such as rape, sexual violence and harassment.
