Kolkota Rainbow Pride A Success

in INDIA, 12/07/2013

Hundreds of LGBT people marched in solidarity at the 12th annual Kolkata Rainbow Pride Walk in India to protest against violence against women and sexual minorities.

This year’s event attracted participants from neighbouring regions as well as overseas travellers from as far afield as the US and Africa. Cheering onlookers were said to be enthralled by the colourful parade of figures, with some even feeling so inspired they joined in the march.

Parade participants wore rainbow-hued costumes and make-up and danced and chanted their way through the parade route which stretched from Jatin Das Park Metro station in south Kolkata to the centrally-located Academy of Fine Arts. Sporting banners that said 'Yes to Sexual Diversity, No to Sexual Violence' they made a colourful spectacle.

"Initially the core issue was to spread awareness but now the walk has evolved as a way to fight for our rights. This year we have focused on legalising gay marriage in India and acceptance of the LGBT community as part of the mainstream," Madhu, a transvestite, told Indian news service, IANS.
