IRQR Board of Directors is Seeking New Board Members

in IRAN, ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF, 15/05/2013

If you are used to working in a team and looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity with a community-based LGBTQ refugee support organization, the Iranian Railroad for Queer Refugees's Board of Directors is currently seeking new Board Members.

The Iranian Railroad for Queer Refugees (IRQR) exists to support  Iranian LGBT/queer people who have fled Iran to escape persecution based  on their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression (as  homosexuality is a crime punishable by corporal punishment and even  death in Iran).

Our goal is:
“To advance human rights for Iranian queers and increase public  awareness about the plight of Iranian queer asylum seeker/refugees while  providing support to Iranian queers who are discriminated on the basis  of their sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.”

In its 5-year history, despite limited resources, the IRQR has helped  705 cases involving LGBTQ Iranian refugees. A modest, Canada-based  incorporated NGO, the IRQR is poised to take its activities to the next  level.

If you are used to working in a team and looking for a meaningful  volunteer opportunity with a community-based LGBTQ refugee support  organization, the Iranian Railroad for Queer Refugees's Board of  Directors is currently seeking new Board Members who have any of the  following:

  • •Experience in Fundraising would be an asset
  •  Experience (employment/volunteer/education) in social service, community development, non-profit or settlement sectors
  • • Knowledge/understanding and/or lived experience of refugee issues  (employment/education/volunteer/personal)
  • •Previous non-profit Board experience is an asset, especially in organizations moving from one level of operation to an increased level.

It is estimated that board members invest 3-5 hours or up to 1  day/month in communications and committee work. The ideal long-term  commitment would be for 2 years but board terms are formally 1 year,  renewable at the annual general meeting. Formal board meetings take  place every 2 or 3 months. They are usually held in downtown Toronto but  since members include directors living outside the city, participation  via phone or Internet is common practice.

Interested parties are invited to send their letters of intent and  resumes before June 15, 2013 to the following email address:  nominations@irqr.ca
