in SOUTH AFRICA, 26/04/2013

Patricia Mashigo, a self-employed sales woman, mother and lesbian was found murdered last weekend, between Saturday the 20th and Sunday the 21st of April 2013.

Patricia Mashigo, a self-employed sales woman, mother and lesbian was found murdered last weekend, between Saturday the 20th and Sunday the 21st of April 2013. Patricia Mashigo is survived by a 13-year-old daughter, a 15-year-old son, two sisters and one brother but to name some of a few of her grieving family members. Whilst there are still no leads on Patricia's case, it is for certain she was victim to a hate crime. It was her solitary walk through Daveyton last weekend after a night out, that left the once cheerful Patricia vulnerable to attack.

The Mashigo family will hold a memorial for Patricia on Friday, the 26th of April 2013 from 14h00. The memorial will begin at Ikatha-Ka Zulu Primary School at 14h00 with a procession which will lead the way to Patricia's family home, on the corner of Eiselen and Mocke Street in Daveyton for the memorial at 15h00. As part of one large community, we encourage all those who can to galvanise and support Patricia and her family. Whether by speaking out against violence and discrimination against LGBTI people or coming to support the Mashigo family, it is important to know that invisibility and silence will not protect marginalised people.
